Background of the Study

Flooding is a recurrent environmental challenge in Sokoto State, often leading to widespread displacement, infrastructure damage, and public health crises. One of the most significant health impacts of flooding is the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever (Bashir & Umar, 2024). Stagnant floodwaters serve as breeding grounds for disease-causing bacteria and parasites, increasing the risk of infection among affected communities.

Climate change and poor urban planning have exacerbated the frequency and severity of floods, overwhelming drainage systems and contaminating water sources (Mustapha & Yusuf, 2023). Inadequate sanitation facilities further heighten the risk, particularly in flood-prone areas where access to clean drinking water is limited.

This study aims to examine the statistical relationship between flooding and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Sokoto State, providing insights into effective disease prevention strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze trends in flooding and waterborne disease outbreaks in Sokoto State.
  2. To assess the impact of flooding on water quality and sanitation infrastructure.
  3. To propose measures for reducing flood-related health risks.

Research Hypotheses

  1. Increased flooding is positively correlated with higher cases of waterborne diseases.
  2. Poor sanitation infrastructure exacerbates disease outbreaks during flood events.
  3. Improved flood management strategies can reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the relationship between flooding and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Sokoto State, particularly in urban and rural communities prone to frequent flooding. Data will be collected from meteorological records, public health reports, and water quality assessments. The study will examine the impact of flooding on access to clean drinking water, sanitation infrastructure, and disease outbreak trends.

Limitations include the potential lack of comprehensive historical data on waterborne disease outbreaks, variations in health reporting systems, and challenges in accessing remote flood-prone areas. Additionally, other environmental factors contributing to disease outbreaks, such as poor hygiene practices, may not be fully isolated in the analysis.

Definition of Terms

  • Flooding: The overflow of water onto normally dry land, often caused by heavy rainfall, river overflow, or poor drainage systems.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms transmitted through contaminated water sources, including cholera, typhoid fever, and dysentery.
  • Sanitation Infrastructure: Facilities and services designed for proper waste disposal, water purification, and hygiene maintenance to prevent disease transmission.
  • Vector-borne Transmission: The spread of diseases through organisms such as mosquitoes, which thrive in stagnant floodwaters.
